The California Labor Commissioner issued an award of $110,878 to J.R.* after his employer, a Berkeley landlord, failed to pay him minimum and overtime wages and failed to provide rest breaks for nearly three years. Jennifer Orthwein Lobbying in Sacramento on Behalf of Trans Prisoners with the Conference of California Bar Associations

Founding Partner Jen Orthwein will be in Sacramento on behalf of Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (BALIF) and the Conference of California Bar Associations (CCBA) lobbying for SB-132, which will require CDCR to treat incarcerated trans folks with dignity and respect by requiring that staff use correct pronouns and house trans people based on their gender identity and/or their perception of health and safety.

We are providing help filling out name and gender marker legal changes and information on how to qualify for a fee waiver.

MEDINA ORTHWEIN LLP ENDORSES NATIONAL PRISON STRIKE AND PLEDGES SUPPORT

Medina Orthwein LLP is proud to endorse and support the National Prison Strike. The strike, which will take place from August 21 to September 9, 2018, was called in response to the April 15, 2018 violence at the Lee Correctional Institution and the inhumane conditions found in prisons throughout the United States.  For more information about the strike and how to get involved, please visit the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee’s website.

Jennifer Orthwein on LEGAL AID ASSOCIATION OF CALIFORNIA’s “Reentry Legal Services: Representing Former Prisoners in SSI Advocacy” panel

Jennifer Orthwein will be a panelist on this informative webinar, hosted by the Legal Aid Association of California.  The event will focus the mental health-related requirements for disability benefits eligibility, with particular applicability to certain vulnerable populations: prisoners who have been adversely impacted by solitary confinement and transgender prisoners who have been traumatized by their prison experience. The panelists will address special issues that may arise in working with these clients. The program will also describe how legal services providers can go into correctional facilities to prepare pre-release Social Security applications.
