BILL EXPANDING PROTECTIONS FOR TRANS PEOPLE IN CUSTODY PASSES STATE SENATE
SB-132, a landmark bill, which Medina Orthwein LLP sponsored and helped write, allows transgender, intersex and gender nonbinary people to have a voice in prison housing decisions. Nothing can make prisons safe, but it will reduce harm for the most vulnerable prison population. Read more here.

Following the Supreme Court’s monumental decision for LGBTQ+ rights in Bostock v. Clayton County, Felicia Medina and Kevin Love Hubbard were panelists on a webinar hosted by the Commonwealth Club. Alongside National Center for Lesbian Rights Executive Director Imani Rupert-Gordon and TransLifeline Executive Director Rev. JENNIFER ORTHWEIN SPEAKS ON #METOOBEHINDBARS PANEL

Jennifer Orthwein, Founding Partner, was a panelist on a #MeTooBehindBars webinar, discussing efforts to release people from jails and prisons immediately in the face of the threat of COVID-19. This is a part of ongoing efforts to stop punishing queer and transgender, gender non-conforming people for surviving and to end all forms of gender-based violence, including those created and perpetrated by the state and its institutions.

Medina Orthwein LLP has expanded its partner base to include Kevin Love Hubbard, formerly a Senior Associate with the firm. The panel was part of a larger two-day event, Healing Justice: Ending Mass Incarceration Conference, presented by the Racial Justice Action Group.

The California Labor Commissioner issued an award of $110,878 to J.R.* after his employer, a Berkeley landlord, failed to pay him minimum and overtime wages and failed to provide rest breaks for nearly three years. The strike, which will take place from August 21 to September 9, 2018, was called in response to the April 15, 2018 violence at the Lee Correctional Institution and the inhumane conditions found in prisons throughout the United States. JENNIFER ORTHWEIN ON LEGAL AID ASSOCIATION OF CALIFORNIA’S “REENTRY LEGAL SERVICES: REPRESENTING FORMER PRISONERS IN SSI ADVOCACY” PANEL

Jennifer Orthwein will be a panelist on this informative webinar, hosted by the Legal Aid Association of California.  The event will focus the mental health-related requirements for disability benefits eligibility, with particular applicability to certain vulnerable populations: prisoners who have been adversely impacted by solitary confinement and transgender prisoners who have been traumatized by their prison experience. The panelists will address special issues that may arise in working with these clients. The program will also describe how legal services providers can go into correctional facilities to prepare pre-release Social Security applications.
